I love traveling off season, Sian Ka'an did not disappoint. It is protected unlike much of the coast and well worth a visit. I arranged for a guide (Carlos was amazing!) and while hiking through the swamps we came across a tower and there I met my new friend Stephan from Slovakia. He joined me on the boat trip and float down the Muyil Canals.

“This trip reminded me that I love solitude. When traveling, being solitary is paramount. There were signs "please be silent!" and I knew I was in the right place.”
Floating down the Muyil Canal was an incredible experience. The Mayans built the canals to facilitate commerce. You wear a life vest and the current takes you slowly through the mangroves. Like an Amusement Park Water Ride but the real deal!
Stephan and Bacalar
He was traveling 6 months in Central America and headed to Bacalar next. I couldn't entertain it having been there 32 years ago and fondly recollect swimming through the pristine seven shades of blue waters. I stepped on a fire ant nest there and I will never quite forget the feeling. Like being on fire. Today, the once clear Bacalar waters have turned murky brown due to over development and a local told me I would cry if I saw it. I would.
